Beyond the Manosphere : Masculinities Today

What does it mean to be a man today? As the misogynistic masculinity of the online ‘manosphere’ becomes increasingly mainstream, Beyond the Manosphere – Masculinities Today considers masculinity as both a performance of power and a lived reality that can be conflicted, banal, vulnerable and tender.

Bringing together works from the 1960s to the present, the exhibition explores masculinity through intimacy, queerness, labour, race, class, fetishisation and popular culture. Artists include Miguel-Ángel Cárdenas, Eduardo Paolozzi, Tetsumi Kudo, Hans Eijkelboom, Paul McCarthy & Mike Kelley, Sophie Calle, Sylvie Fleury, Hamishi Farah, Reba Maybury, Paul Pfeiffer, P. Staff, Diamond Stingily, Salman Toor, Bruno Zhu and Selina Zürrer. Across these works, masculinity emerges not as a fixed identity, but as a contested field of desires and contradictions—where dominance coexists with fragility, control with exposure, and fantasy with failure.
